Conference curated by Matteo Costanzo and Emilia Giorgi

The international conference Re-Use the City wants to answer to the challenge of the Rome Architecture Festival through an event in which the dialogue among the different branches of contemporary culture could lead to interesting exchanges and contacts between Rome and other international cities, mainly paying attention to Germany.

The purpose of this meeting is to outline a programmatic ideal manifesto about the modalities and the strategies of re-using the city and the landscape according to the languages of Architecture, Art and Music. The architectural, urban and artistic topicality of this theme grants the access to a great theoretical literature and to different studies and technological researches. This highlights the importance of the social, economical and cultural spur toward necessary investigation of the spatial potentialities that the re-use of the contemporary city can offer.

We nowadays witness the birth of new strategies of conversions of the habitat and the places where we live in and in general we see a progressive transformation of the city. This is a process that involves also the already existing buildings and the public places with the aim tocreate new places to live in according to an urban development that doesn't occupy other new soil.

In this sense, the German experience is fundamental. In Germany actually for the last twenty years they have been developing an important phenomenon of urban re- generation, as you can see in Berlin, and a landscape re- generation, as you can see in the industrial area of the Ruhr. By speaking, here in Rome, of these studies about this new way of thinking on town-planning - comparing them with some of our most interesting experimentations- we aim to activate a virtuous circle between the German experiences and the possibilities offered by the Italian territory.

A publication curated by Emilia Giorgi and Matteo Costanzo, will be soon edited by Volume! edizioni.
