Big Architecture conferences are special, and are set apart from other architectural conferences and events by a specific theme, a particular set of issues the conferences works to develop. BA themes are important as guides, they help focus the talks, frame specific design issues which are particularly timely and relevant; and create a kind of red line that’s more clearly developed and more rewarding to follow.

This year’s theme is “New Rules, New Responses”. The conference explores the relationship between changing demands and intelligent responses in architecture today; and considers how these changing relationships are shaping the architectures practiced today and in the future.
Selected internationally-engaged offices from across the continent have been invited to address these issues through their exceptional work, and through a dynamic dialogue-process within the framework of “New Rules, New Responses”.

All of these offices demonstrate a certain touch, a particular intelligent discipline and sensitivity that comes through in their design solutions, regardless of scale, location or program. From the wooden-arched ceiling of the Danish CEBRA’s Iglo Greve sports facility to the Belgian Robbrecht en Daem’s Concert Hall in Bruges or the Spanish Ensemble office’s inspiring installation at the last year’s Venice Biennale – all exemplify instances of best response-practice.

This spring Zavod Big, together with its flagship publication HIŠE magazine, repeats its special competition and exhibition event – the Big Architecture Awards for Innovative and Sustainable Excellence in Private Houses.
The Big Architecture Awards is comprised of a sweeping summer-long outdoor exhibition in central Ljubljana, which together with an accompanying special HIŠE magazine issue, assembles a discriminating selection of the best residential architecture being practiced all over the world today.
The best of the selected projects, as chosen by an expert jury, is recognised with a Big Architecture Awards, and presented at a special awards ceremony.
