The Prix de Rome is a Dutch 'state' prize for artists and architects up to 35 years of age. The prize is intended to stimulate artistic development in an international context. In this year's Prix de Rome Architecture, ARCAM is the partner of the state academy for the visual arts in exhibiting the work produced for this prestigious prize.

The PRIXDEROME.NL 2010 jury - chairman Aaron Betsky (USA) - selected 4 nominees:
Jeroen Spee & Jeroen Steenvoorden
Thijs van Bijsterveldt & Oana Rades
Olv Klijn
Johan Selbing & Anouk Vogel

FABRIC (Olv Klijn and Eric Frijters) are the awarded architects of 2010. Their winning design introduces free zones for planning, open public space and a bazaar mountain. That is the conclusion of a comprehensive process of research and design in which the designer takes a stand. at the august allebéplein in amsterdam new west there appears to be more at stake than the mere layout of a square. according to its users the solution for the august allebéplein is obvious: a total clean-up operation. and yet the prix de rome architecture 2010 asks what the square’s redevelopment could do for the neighbourhood, for amsterdam and for the region.

With ‘slabs, fabrics and open space’ the answer of fabric features a new design position, in which local initiatives are linked to global  trends and converted into opportunities - that accommodate short-term wishes and long-term targets within a flexible design.

FABRIC wins the oldest and most prestigious prize for young architects, urbanists and landscape architects
