The Gösta Serlachius Fine Arts Foundation is organising a general international design contest for the designing of the extension to the Serlachius Art Museum Gösta (Joenniemi Manor). The contest is running from 1 December 2010 until 4 March 2011. The result will be published in May 2011, and The Fine Arts Foundation hopes that the new museum will be ready to open its doors to guests in 2013. The aim of the contest is to find an architecturally impressive and high-standard solution that will fit naturally in the unique and high-class cultural milieu. In addition to the aesthetic aspects, the functionality of the new premises is important. The manor, built as the home of the founder of the Fine Arts Foundation, Gösta Serlachius, is of insufficient size to serve the current purpose of the museum. It currently has 500 square metres of exhibition space. With the extension, approximately 4,700 square metres in size, the new premises can contain large and modern exhibition and collection spaces, customer service and restaurant facilities, and an office for the museums. The project´s cost is estimated at 15 million euros. The winning proposals will be selected by a seven-member jury appointed for the contest. The financial prizes to be awarded total 110,000 euros, with the winning proposal to receive 40,000 EUR. The competition rules of the Finnish Association of Architects (SAFA) are being observed in the contest.
