The inaugural exhibitions of MAXXI include the art and architecture collections, Kutlug Ataman, Ginno de Dominics and Luigi Moretti

The inaugural exhibitions

Space: from the museum's art and architecture collections.30 May 2010 – February 2011

Curated by: Pippo Ciorra, Alessandro D’Onofrio, Bartolomeo Pietromarchi, Gabi Scardi

90 works from the MAXXI Art collection will be exhibited along a single route winding inside and outside the museum (including examples by Alighiero Boetti, William Kentridge, Giuseppe Penone and Francesco Vezzoli) in an open dialogue with the site-specific installations of ten international architects and architectural studios (including Diller, Scofidio e Renfro, Lacaton & Vassal Architects and West 8).The visitor will be guided through an exploration of the complex concept of space understood in both the environmental senses, as a place of imagination and as a political and social dimension.

The exhibition will include:

Italian geographies

Curated by Maristella Casciato, Pippo Ciorra and Margherita Guccione, produced by Studio Azzurro.

A 40-metre-long video installation recounting sites, protagonists and stories of Italian architecture and design from the mid-twentieth century to the present through drawings, photographs, interview and film clips reworked and assembled by Studio Azzurro.

NETinSPACE
Curated by Elena Giulia Rossi
An exploration of Net Art investigating the contaminations between the virtual and physical worlds through the works of artists including Miltos Manetas, Bianco-Valente and Stephen Vitiello.


The winners of the international MAXXIduepercento competition:

Linee rette di luce nell’iperspazio curvilineo by Maurizio Mochetti           

An installation of light and sculptural elements that is both essential and surprising. The work tackles the relationship between visitor and site, becoming in the process, as the artist says, a “spatial barometer”.

Emergency’s Paediatric Centre a Port Sudan Supported by MAXXI by Massimo Grimaldi

Work-in-progress images will document all phases in the construction and opening of the new Emergency hospital at Port Sudan, the reportage being presented in a synchronised dual-video projection on a MAXXI external wall.There will also be a tribute to Fabio Mauri.

Kutlug Ataman. Mesopotamian Dramaturgies30 May – September 2010Curated by Cristiana Perrella.A project by one of the most interesting Turkish contemporary artists, Mesopotamian Dramaturgies will be exhibited in its entirety. Eight video works reflect on the problematic relationship between East and West, between modernization and tradition, globalization and the persistence of local cultures.Ginnno de Dominics. The Immortal30 May – November 2010

The entire career of De Dominicis, a key figure in Italian contemporary art and point of reference for the younger generations, is examined through over 130 works in an exhibition that represents the most exhaustive retrospective ever dedicated to the artist. The works on show includes the gigantic Cosmic Magnet at over 24 metres long.

Luigi Moretti architetto. From Ratonalism to the informal

Luigi Moretti, an extrovert designer and a scholar of vast culture and profound sensibility, was one of the leading figures in the architectural culture of the 20th century. This exhibition analyses his design work and theoretical activities through the study of his writings and the analysis of built works and projects.

In collaboration with: The Academy of Architecture and the Archive of the Modern of the University of Italian Switzerland (USI) and the Central State Archive.
