about the book
Piecing Together São Paulo is geared towards young travelers visiting, studying, or living in São Paulo. São Paulo has become an exciting tourist hotspot, especially for those on a budget. The authors want to transform how travelers approach urban tourism in cosmopolitan and globalized cities like São Paulo by stressing a non-consumptive –meaning, you don’t spend money- mindset.
The guide is divided into three parts: food, walking tours, and nightlife.
Section I introduces the relationship between food and identity in São Paulo and unpacks São Paulo’s exciting and diverse culinary scene, from street snacks to all-you-can-eat meat rodizios. It also provides great, inexpensive restaurant suggestions around the city.
Section II re-imagines São Paulo’s downtown as ten walkable “pieces” based on cultural spaces rather than municipal neighborhood boundaries.
Section III focuses on São Paulo’s world-renowned nightlife, as the authors give readers a cultural tour of the city’s bars, nightclubs, and live music venues.
About the authors: Aron and Gabriel Lesser, both 22 year-old Brazilian-Americans, study at Brown University in the United States. Their mother is Brazilian and their American father is a historian of Brazil, so the twins spent a large portion of their childhood in a Portuguese-English bilingual household in São Paulo. Aron studies Urban Anthropology and focuses on the formation of cultural spaces and identities in Latin American and the United States. Gabriel studies Latin American and Spanish immigrant literature and his writings focus on language and identity in multi-ethnic communities.
Piecing Together São Paulo and São Paulo 10 Walking Tours are being released together. Both books belong to Narrativa Um’s guide series, which also includes guides in Portuguese like Dez Roteiros Históricos a Pé em São Paulo.
