The journey to Bologna was already scheduled for the research, considering the importance of this historic city as a reference for the theories and practices for the conservation and restoration. Added to this fact, the motivation for the Tadao Ando's conference, held at the Università di Bologna.
This award-winning and recognized architect explored the responsibility of architecture ... or rather, the architect in society, in a world where demand for housing grows each day. This responsibility includes thinking about alternatives solutions on the unsustainability panorama of the cities today.
As in the past, when generations of engineers, architects, builders and craftsmen made the cities through on a continuous superimpositions and juxtapositions. What can be seen in Bologna for example, where the integrity resounds the historicity of all, by imposing constructions, arranged side by side, with numerous porticos extended. Interposed and overlapping several past’ moments, reveal themselves through traces of textures and materialities, contrasted in the present.
In this complexity with constructions such as churches, theaters and palaces, beyond the towers and gates that recall the ancient fortress town. The offer under porticos-galleries, as pedestrian’s passages, with interesting windows’ fashion stores which filter the annoyance of the intense traffic of vehicles. This composed by automobiles, bus, motorcycles and scooters, and fragile bicycles competing itineraries.
In contrast with this panorama, common in most cities, stand sections, in which only the route for pedestrians and bicycles are allowed. Narrow winding streets that open into large squares where cultural life is buzzing... This visit to Bologna in the spring yet, even with the commitments in IUAV posdoc ‘s Venice, with support from Capes, was certainly not enough to exhaust the possibilities to study this historic city “ par excellence “. Thanks also hospitality of “Il B di Bologna”… Other journeys will be necessary...
